What is a Global Talent Visa?

The Global Talent visa for the UK is a visa category aimed at talented and promising individuals in a range of fields who wish to live and work in the UK.

The Home Office invites applications for this visa from leaders or potential leaders in the fields of academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. Applications are invited from candidates who are ‘promising’ and ‘talented’, with ‘promising’ applicants being those who have the potential to become leaders in their fields, and ‘talent’ applicants being individuals who are already leaders in their chosen field.

If you are successful in being approved for this visa, you will be allowed to live and work in the UK for as long as five years at a time. You will also be able to apply to continue extending this visa if you wish, with no limit to the total amount of time you are permitted to stay in the UK.

Who are the Endorsing Bodies?

If you wish to apply for this UK Talent visa, you will normally be required to obtain an endorsement from one of the Endorsing Bodies approved by the Home Office, before you will be permitted to apply for the visa itself. The Endorsing Body will assess whether you are a leader or potential leader, which is a crucial element of the process of obtaining this visa.

It is important to note that different Endorsing Bodies cover different disciplines, so you will need to carefully consider which Endorsing Body may represent the best match to your skill set. The various approved Endorsing Bodies together do not cover all potential disciplines, and it may be that your speciality cannot currently be assessed.

Our immigration solicitors and experts have a superb track record of helping clients to achieve endorsement for the Global Talent visa in the UK. For a more in-depth conversation about the process and your potential suitability for this visa route, please book your consultation with us today.

What are the different routes to Endorsement?

If you are an applicant who requires an endorsement, the process of attempting to secure the UK Global Talent visa will effectively be split into two stages: applying for endorsement by an Endorsing Body, and then – once you have been successfully endorsed – applying for entry clearance or permission to stay. You will be able to bypass the first of these stages, moving straight onto the second stage, if you hold an acceptable prestigious prize.

The Home Office approves various Endorsing Bodies for the Global Talent visa, with each Endorsing Body having its own set of criteria. Nonetheless, in order to be successful in securing endorsement from one of these organisations, you will require a substantial body of work, as well as support from experts in your field.

The exact requirements that must be fulfilled by those seeking a Global Talent visa UK endorsement depends on the specific field for which they are looking to be endorsed as a leader or potential leader. Routes to endorsement are available in the categories of:

  • Arts and culture
  • Architecture
  • Fashion design industry
  • Film and television
  • Digital technology
  • Science, engineering, humanities and medicine fields

Book your consultation with our Global Talent visa solicitors to learn more about the different routes to endorsement, and how we can help you pick the right route for your background, track record and aspirations.

What documents are needed for an Endorsement?

Your application for an endorsement for the Global Talent visa for the UK will need to be submitted online. As part of this application, you will be required to supply the supporting documents requested by your chosen Endorsing Body.

The process works slightly differently for digital technology applicants, who will need to upload their supporting documents via Tech Nation’s own application form. If this describes your situation, you are urged not to send these documents to the Home Office.

Please note that if the Home Office suspects any of your submitted supporting documents may not be genuine, it is entitled to request the original documents. The scanned documents will then be forwarded to the Endorsing Body for their consideration.

You will also need to supply the following specific documents when applying for the Global Talent visa for the UK:

  • A valid passport or other document showing your identity and nationality
  • The results of your tuberculosis test, if you’re from a country where taking this test is a requirement

Applicants who have had an award or scholarship to study in the UK over the past year will also require written permission to apply from the agency or government that granted it.

Please also note that for any documents in a language other than English or Welsh, you will be required to provide a certified translation.

A blank page will also be needed in your passport for your visa, if either of the following are true:

  • You are from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland
  • You are from the EU, EEA or Switzerland, but you do not have a biometric passport containing a chip

If you are relying on having won an eligible award when applying for the UK Talent visa, the Home Office will look at publicly available information – such as the website of the award organisation – to determine whether you have won. If the Home Office cannot find confirmation of your award win, you may be asked to provide evidence of this.

What happens after I obtain an Endorsement?

Once you have been successful in securing an endorsement by an Endorsing Body – presuming you are not instead relying on having won an eligible prize accepted by the Home Office – you will be permitted to proceed to the next stage of the process. This will be the stage at which you apply for the UK Global Talent visa itself.

You will need to lodge your application for the Global Talent visa online, and the process by which you do this will depend on whether you are:

  • Outside the UK and intending to come to the UK
  • Inside the UK and extending your present visa
  • Inside the UK and switching from a different visa category

Even after you have been endorsed by an Endorsing Body, you will need to ensure you have satisfied the following criteria before you then apply for the actual visa:

  • You have been endorsed by a Home Office-approved organisation
  • You’re applying no later than three months after receiving your endorsement letter

The Endorsing Body has not withdrawn its endorsement by the time you apply

What happens if the Endorsement is refused?

In the event that your application for an endorsement is unsuccessful, you will be entitled to request a review of this decision. You are required to submit your request on the endorsement review form within 28 calendar days of the date your application was refused, emailing it to the Home Office’s Global Talent Endorsements inbox.

The Home Office will then forward your completed form to the relevant Endorsing Body, so that you can receive a response to your request within 28 days.

If your request for an endorsement review does not change the decision on your application, you will be provided with the Endorsing Body’s explanation for their decision.

What is Exceptional Promise and Exceptional Talent?

Candidates for the Global Talent visa for the UK can be effectively divided into the two categories of ‘talented’ and ‘promising’. ‘Talent’ applicants are those who are already leaders in their field, with a significant track record of achievements, while ‘promise’ applicants are those who should be able to show leadership potential in their field.

You may have some difficulty deciding whether you should apply under ‘Exceptional Promise’ or ‘Exceptional Talent’ as a candidate for the UK Talent visa. This is a point that our knowledgeable and experienced Global Talent visa lawyers can advise you on; your decision may depend in part, for example, on your number of years’ experience in your field.

Whether you are most interested in an Exceptional Promise or an Exceptional Talent visa for the UK, please don’t hesitate to book your consultation with us for further advice and guidance.

When do I apply for the Global Talent Visa?

If you are relying on an endorsement by an Endorsing Body for your application for a UK Global Talent visa, you are allowed to submit your stage-two application before the first-stage application has concluded.

You may choose to do this, for example, if you are already in the UK, but your permission is due to expire. In this situation, you will wish to ensure you do not overstay in the UK. If you do take this route, the Home Office will hold your stage-two application until a decision has been made on your stage-one application.

If you depend on being endorsed as part of your bid for the Global Talent visa, but you submit a second-stage application without having lodged a stage-one application, the Home Office will accept your stage-two application. However, the application will be placed on hold, and a member of staff from the Home Office will contact you to request that you send a stage-one application within 14 days.

Provided that you then fulfil this request and have a stage-one application with the Home Office within that 14-day window, the stage-two application will be held until a decision has been made on your stage-one application. If, however, you do not send a first-stage application to the Home Office within those 14 days, your second-stage application will be rejected, on the basis that the application isn’t valid if you don’t also hold a valid endorsement.

What if my Global Talent Visa is refused?

There are various requirements that a candidate for a Global Talent visa must satisfy in order for their application to be valid. These include – but are not limited to – the application having been made on the correct form, the necessary fee and Immigration Health Charge having been paid, and the applicant having been issued with a valid endorsement letter or won a prestigious prize of those accepted by the Home Office.

It is crucial to ensure you meet all the validity requirements for this visa category when lodging your application, to ensure the Home Office does not reject your application for reasons that could have been avoided.

If your stage-two application for the visa from outside the UK is refused, you will not be able to appeal against the decision. However, you do have the option of applying for an administrative review of the decision, if you believe the Home Office has made an error in its consideration of your application. Our UK Global Talent visa lawyers can provide further advice on this course of action; simply call 0208 215 0053.

What Our Customers Say About Us

Global Talent Visa Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many documents can I submit for an Endorsement

It is important to familiarise yourself with the Global Talent visa UK endorsement requirements that apply to the specific route you choose to take, including what documentation you will be expected to provide. Our central London-based solicitors can assist and advise you on this point.

Different Endorsing Bodies have different requirements when it comes to the documents they might request. In the case of an Arts Council England (ACE) application, for instance, the body assessing the application will be either ACE, the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT), the British Fashion Council (BFC) or the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The application form will state which sub-endorser will be considering the application.

If the endorser will be ACE itself, you will be required to supply three letters of endorsement – one from a UK-based arts or cultural organisation, one from an arts or cultural organisation, institution or company that may or may not be UK-based, and one from a third arts organisation or from an eminent individual with recognised expertise in your field. You will also be expected to provide up to 10 pieces of supporting documentation.

Candidates for an endorsement for the Global Talent visa for the UK who are applying through Tech Nation, meanwhile, will need to provide three letters of recommendation from three different well-established organisations acknowledged as experts in the digital technology field, along with a CV. They can also provide as many as 10 pieces of information to demonstrate that they satisfy the qualifying criteria.

It is possible to apply for the Global Talent visa for the UK without needing an endorsement at all, if you have won an eligible award from the list of prizes detailed on the GOV.UK website. Otherwise, you can expect to need to rely on an endorsement from a Home Office-approved Endorsing Body when applying for this visa.

If you are among those relying on an endorsement, the ‘first stage’ of the application will be for the endorsement, while the ‘second stage’ of the application will be for the visa itself. The Endorsing Body will assess whether you are a leader or potential leader, so this is a crucial part of the process of obtaining a Global Talent visa.

It is generally expected that you will apply for an endorsement before you then apply for the visa. However, you may choose to submit your stage-two application prior to receiving a decision on your first-stage application – for example, if you are already in the UK and your permission to remain in the country is due to expire, in which case, you may be anxious to ensure you do not overstay in the UK while awaiting a decision on your application. If you do lodge a second-stage application before the first-stage application is decided on, the Home Office will hold the stage-two application until it has made a decision on your first-stage application.

In the event that you make a second-stage application without having first made an application for a Global Talent visa UK endorsement, the Home Office will accept your stage-two application and place it on hold, and will ask you to submit your stage-one application within 14 days. If the department does not then receive your stage-one application within that 14-day window, your stage-two application will be rejected, on the grounds that your application for this visa will be invalid in the absence of a valid endorsement.

This UK Talent visa enables you to live and work in the country for up to five years at a time. If you wish to remain in the UK for longer can this, and you are not applying to settle in the country, you will need to secure an extension – or ‘renewal’ – of the visa before it expires. Provided that you do obtain such an extension each time it is due, there is no limit to how long you can remain in the UK in total as a holder of this visa.

If, however, you wish to use this visa as a route to settling in the UK – a status known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’, or ILR –this may be possible for you after three or five years, depending on the field in which you work, and how you apply.

Being granted indefinite leave to remain will entitle you to live, work and study in the UK for as long as you like; you will also have the right to apply for benefits in the UK, if you are eligible for them.

As a holder of the UK Global Talent visa, you will be allowed to apply for settlement if you satisfy any of the below conditions:

  • You won an eligible award that has not been withdrawn, in addition to having been living and working in the UK on this visa for a minimum of three years
  • You were endorsed in your field by the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society or UK Research and Innovation, in addition to having been living and working in the UK on this visa for a minimum of three years
  • You were endorsed in your field as a recognised leader (‘exceptional talent’) by Arts Council England or Tech Nation, in addition to having been living and working in the UK on this visa for a minimum of three years
  • You were endorsed in your field as an emerging leader (‘exceptional promise’) by Arts Council England or Tech Nation, in addition to having been living and working in the UK on this visa for a minimum of five years

Furthermore, those with the UK Talent visa who wish to secure ILR are required to satisfy the following requirements:

  • They must have spent no more than 180 days outside the UK during any 12-month period – this is referred to as ‘continuous residence’
  • They must still be doing paid work in the field they arrived in the UK to work in
  • They must pass the UK Government’s Life in the UK Test
  • They must meet the English language requirements

Those who applied for the Global Talent visa based on an endorsement must also still be endorsed by the organisation that gave them the letter of endorsement to obtain a visa, when they come to apply for ILR status.

There are also certain circumstances when applications for indefinite leave to remain may be refused by the Home Office. These include if the applicant:

  • Has a criminal record in the UK or another country
  • Provided the Home Office with false or incomplete information
  • Has broken immigration law

If you wish to eventually apply to settle in the UK – a status also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’, or ILR – as the holder of a Global Talent visa, one of the requirements for this is to have spent no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period. This is called the ‘continuous residence’ requirement.

This is not the only requirement if you intend toapply for ILR as a Global Talent visa holder. The other criteria for applying for ILR on this visa include having won an eligible award or endorsement that has not been withdrawn, still doing paid work in the field you arrived in the UK to work in, and passing the Government’s Life in the UK Test.

As a trusted source of Global Talent visa UK guidance, our solicitors can advise on the full range of requirements when you apply for settlement. Book your consultation today to find out more.

As a candidate for endorsement and the Global Talent visa, it is important to be realistic about how long it will take for you to complete the application process, as well as to wait for a decision.

You will be expected, for example, to prove your identity as part of your application, and to provide your documents. You may require an appointment for this, in which case, you should allow for the extra time. You will find out if you need an appointment when you begin your application.

Once you have submitted your application online for the UK Talent visa, in addition to proving your identity and supplying your documents, you can generally expect the Home Office to decide on your visa within the following timeframes:

  • Three weeks, if you are outside the UK
  • Eight weeks, if you are already in the UK

If you need to attend an appointment, you may have the option of paying for a quicker decision. The exact steps for doing this depend on whether you are outside or inside the UK.

As for if you are seeking an endorsement for the Global Talent visa for the UK, there is a fast track route for this, provided that you can show evidence of one of the following:

  • That you hold, or have held in the 12 months prior to your application date, a peer reviewed research fellowship or award named on the list published by the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the British Academy
  • That you have been appointed to an academic or research position at an approved Higher Education Institution or research institute in the UK, named on the list published by the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the British Academy
  • That you will be hosted or employed in a UK research organisation named on the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published list, and will make critical contributions to work supported by a substantial research grant or reward from an endorsed funder named on the UKRI published list

Depending on which of the above you seek to provide evidence of as part of your application for endorsement, there are other requirements of which you will need to be aware, and for which our Global Talent visa lawyers can provide suitably tailored advice. For more information, please call 0208 215 0053.

Once you have applied for, and successfully obtained a Global Talent visa UK endorsement from an approved Endorsing Body, it is important that this endorsement is still valid when you come to apply for the actual visa. If the Endorsing Body has withdrawn its endorsement by the time of your stage-two visa application, you can expect the Home Office to reject your application as invalid.

Not all applicants for the UK Global Talent visa will be relying on an endorsement in order to be approved for the visa. However, if your initial application does depend on being endorsed, it is also important to ensure your stage-two application date is no more than three months after the date on the endorsement letter.

If you are a holder of an existing Global Talent visa and you are applying to extend it, and you relied on an endorsement for your initial application, you will not need to obtain a new endorsement decision for the extension application. However, it is crucial that the Endorsing Body has not withdrawn that previous endorsement.

Failure to meet all the validity requirements for a Global Talent visa extension application is likely to mean your application is rejected and not considered by the Home Office.

The UK Global Talent Visa is a visa category designed to attract highly skilled individuals in fields such as science, engineering, medicine, humanities, digital technology, and the arts to live and work in the UK.

Eligibility includes individuals who can demonstrate exceptional talent (as leaders) or exceptional promise (as emerging leaders) in their field, typically endorsed by a recognized UK endorsing body kindly find below FAQs applicable to your field of talent.

The process involves two stages: [1] obtaining an endorsement from a designated endorsing body and then [2] applying for the visa through the UK Home Office.

Designated endorsing bodies include UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), The Royal Society, The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering, Tech Nation, and Arts Council England, British Fashion Council, Royal Institute of British Architects, and PACT.

The Key Differences are the following:

  1. Career Stage: Exceptional Talent is for those who are already recognized leaders, while Exceptional Promise is for those who are on a clear trajectory to become leaders usually within the first 5 years of their career.
  2. Level of Achievements: Exceptional Talent requires a higher level of sustained achievements and international recognition, whereas Exceptional Promise focuses on demonstrating significant achievements and potential for future success.
  3. Type of Evidence: Exceptional Talent applicants need to provide evidence of long-term contributions and recognition, while Exceptional Promise applicants need to show evidence of early success and potential for growth.
  4. Route to settlement: Exceptional talent visa holders are eligible to apply for settlement (Indefinite leave to remain) after 3 years if they meet the absence requirements while Exceptional Promise visa holders are only eligible to apply after completing 5 years on the visa.

Both categories aim to attract highly skilled individuals to the UK, but they cater to different career stages and levels of established influence in the field.

The endorsement process usually takes up to 8 weeks from the submission of a complete application.

Benefits include the ability to work for any employer or start your own business in the UK, bring family members, and access a pathway to settlement and indefinite leave to remain in the UK. There is also no English or Financial requirement for this visa.

Yes, you can apply for the UK Global Talent Visa from within the UK, provided you meet the endorsement requirements and other eligibility criteria.

The Global Talent category is not subject to a cap on the number of applicants.

To qualify for indefinite leave to remain, Global Talent visa holders will need to have spent not more than 180 days outside the UK during any rolling 12 month during the continuous period of leave relied upon. However, Global Talent visa holders who have been endorsed by the endorsing bodies responsible for science, engineering, humanities and medicine and who undertake research overseas directly related to their grant of leave, will not have such absences counted when they apply for settlement. Partners of Global Talent migrants will be treated in the same way.

The visa is initially granted for 3-5 years, with the possibility of extension or transition to permanent residency known as Indefinite Leave to remain.

If your endorsement application is rejected, you cannot proceed with the Global Talent Visa application. However, you may have the option to request an endorsement review within 28 calendar days from the decision or reapply with additional evidence and improvements to your application.
